Historian's Office

New York State Public Historians
New York is the only state requiring, by law, that each municipality have a historian.   The State law defines our responsibilities, breaking them into these four broad categories:

  1. Research and Writing
  2. Education and Public Presentations
  3. Historic Preservation
  4. Organization and Advocacy.

A report documenting the fulfillment of these responsiblities is prepared and sent to the State Historian, the County Historian, and our appointing officer.

My office is organized as a research center with resources available to those performing historical or genealogical research relating to the Town of Vestal.  These resources include, but are not limited to:

  • Surname Files
  • Subject or Topic Files
  • Census Records
  • Vital Records
  • Town Minutes
  • Published Documents
  • Photographs
  • Maps
  • Yearbooks ... and much more!
